In a country where days of national mourning are like weekends, every national tear for the dead of the social and class war is also a sob of hypocrisy. At the same time as the local alignment with the international anti-immigration policy of terror and death drowns more than 300 people on the Greek sea border, the Greek national team holds a minute’s silence and the political staff conducts memorials for the wronged. What hypocrisy! That the nation should mourn those it murders in order to keep the Greek ideal untainted and ironclad.
Over 300 more names on the long list of those put to death, whose crime was to seek a safer life. 300 more names of those killed by ‘drownings’ at sea borders, vehicle diversions from highway chases and cold-blooded murders at borders and metropolises by the official para-state and its fascist groups. And for all these deaths, the political staff has more militarisation to promise: extension of the Evros fence, reinforcement of the border guard, new cooperation agreements with Frontex, NATO contributions and camps. Because states respond to death with death. Because the murders of migrants are not the problem but the numerical result of the acts themselves.
