WE OPEN CRACKS, WE DON’T BUILD BRIDGES

Presentation of the anarchist circle of Foligno

Our intention in opening the Anarchist Circle “La Faglia” is to create a space for discussion based on our anarchist and revolutionary principles. Coinciding with the closure of the Circolaccio Anarchico that existed in Spoleto from October 2018 to July 2022, the need had emerged among comrades who met in that space to open a new circle where, in addition to continuing the previous initiatives, the foundations would be laid for a new and further opportunity to reflect on our convictions.

The debates that took place at the Circolaccio Anarchico [Bad Anarchist Circle] focused on the urgency of deepening the reasons for our struggle and the current conditions of exploitation and revolutionary clash on an international level, in particular addressing the concept and idea of the State; the wars in Libya and Yemen, the SNAM gas pipeline, the Italian political theatre and the situation in the Middle East; without forgetting solidarity with the comrades in prison, the new repressive dynamics and special surveillance; technologies of death, struggles against noxiousness, especially nuclear power; the generalised uprisings that have broken out in various parts of the world and the last few years between political management of the emergency, repression and opportunities for revolt. All of these initiatives will find continuity with what will be addressed in the new space.

One of the principles of anarchism, the immediate expression of its theoretical-practical combination, speaks to us of a projectual necessity: the tools, our attempts to critically examine reality, must be consistent with ideas and method, and thus emerge directly from the developments and contingent needs of the struggle. It is on the basis of this conviction that we see this circle as a tool for stimulating reflection and increasing possibilities. So, “La Faglia” is not meant to be an end in itself, but a consequent expression of our perspective in the context of today’s and future conditions of struggle.

So, why “La Faglia” [fissure, crack]? Firstly, because this is a land of earthquakes, consequently of speculation and abandonment of the mountains. Right in the territory of Foligno lies Colfiorito, epicentre of the earthquake of 1997 and today at the centre of the SNAM pipeline project (as a major installation, the size of a football pitch, is to be built to connect two sections of the pipeline), a strategic infrastructure of ENI and Italian imperialism, recently approved during the last council of ministers of the Draghi government. But not only. Above all we see La Faglia as a moment of rupture, because – convinced that negation is what heightens the intellect – we prefer to open up cracks rather than ‘build bridges’. In particular, we think of the class divide [fracture] as a typical, characterising, radical element of humankind against any generic humanitarian universalism. And similarly, against any ideology of the nation as a unitary entity, against any front between classes for love of country, convinced – still today, as some comrades stated 150 years ago – that “the proletarians of every country must establish, outside of all bourgeois politics, solidarity in revolutionary action”.

Today, as in the past, we stand in continuity with these convictions and in order to realise this new and further opportunity to reflect on them, an archive will be opened in the circle focusing on the collection of books and publications concerning anarchist and revolutionary theories, practices and experiences. This archive will be aimed not so much at the preservation of historical memory, but rather at increasing the scope of the reflection and critical investigation that we intend to stimulate with the circle, once again in continuity with what anarchists have always maintained: archives and libraries are not ‘dead letters’ but an active tool for the struggle. On the basis of sharing this criterion, we invite all comrades who would like to contribute to the archive to do so by sending us books and publications.

In the light of today’s repressive escalation (manifested particularly against the anarchist movement in recent years), the result of the more general tightening of liberalism and the reconfiguration of the democratic wrapping of western countries in the context of the structural crisis of capital, and convinced as we are that ‘not a step backwards’ is not just a rhetorical expression: we remain present in the struggle, we persist with anarchist propaganda, we stand in solidarity with the imprisoned comrades, we openly support the theories, practices and experiences of international revolutionary anarchism.

This is the spirit that moves us to open “La Faglia” and from this we invite comrades to participate in our initiatives. No Gods no State, no servants, no masters!
