On Tuesday afternoon, unknown persons set fire to cables in various points of the railway line connecting Mühldorf with Freilassing. The rail traffic on the line was consequently suspended. Police are assuming that the act is politically motivated and are looking for possible links with other cases of arson.
Passenger trains between Mühldorf and Freilassing suspended
According to the police headquarters of southern Upper Bavaria, an electrical fault had initially been detected. When the federal police checked the signalling system, they discovered burnt and molten cables inside the storm drains along various points in the railway tracks. The damage had clearly been done intentionally. The signalling systems had stopped functioning as a result of arson. All passenger trains between Mühldorf and Freilassing were therefore suspended.
Service should be restored without delay
According to a railway spokesperson, the judicial police have concluded their surveys on site. Repairs are now about to proceed. The replacement cables have already been procured. The railways expect the service to be able to recommence completely this evening. At the moment the Mühldorf-Burghausen line is still out of use. An emergency service using buses and trains has been established. There are also delays on the Mühldorf-Freilassing and Mühldorf-Traunstein lines.
There is still no information available concerning the extent of the damage. The State security commissioner, competent for crimes presumed to be of a political nature, will take over investigations.
Is there a link with other incendiary attacks on the railways?
The police are also investigating possible links with other incendiary attacks on the railways. In the month of October 2023, cables along the Tüßling-Mühldorf railway line were set on fire. At the same time, on a building site for a geothermic plant in nearby Polling, a number of construction machines were burnt. At the time, the damage was estimated to be around 2.5 million euros. Shortly afterwards, the investigations were entrusted to the central Bavarian Office for the struggle against extremism and terrorism (ZET) under the general Prosecutor of Munich and the investigatory group “Raute” of the Munich police headquarters. So far no suspects have been identified.
