Bordeaux (Gironde): four times more likely to block rail traffic (France)

Train traffic severely disrupted between Bordeaux and Toulouse due to fires: arson suspected.

People traveling between Bordeaux and Toulouse will need to be patient this Sunday. After being cut off for most of the day, train traffic remains severely disrupted between Bordeaux and Agen this Sunday. Trains are running at reduced speed. Some trains have been canceled, while others have been diverted via the southern route through Dax and Tarbes, adding two hours to the journey. This follows four fires on Sunday on cables running alongside a railway line. Two fires broke out in Cadaujac, one in Villenave d’Ornon, and another in Ayguemorte-Les-Graves.
In a statement, the SNCF said that “this is likely to be an act of malicious intent.” SNCF network agents visited the scene of the fire and noted “numerous disruptions to signaling equipment.”For his part, the Bordeaux public prosecutor explained that “given the simultaneous nature of these four fires, the theory that they were started deliberately is strongly favored.” An investigation has been launched into “damage caused by arson committed by an organized gang,” and the case has been handed over to the Bordeaux-Bouliac gendarmerie’s investigation unit.

No return to normal before Monday morning

The consequences of these fires have been significant. Traffic was completely interrupted between Bordeaux and Langon, south of Gironde, from 8:40 a.m., and severely disrupted between Bordeaux and Toulouse. Replacement buses were put in place and some trains bound for Toulouse were diverted via Dax and Tarbes. In the morning, passengers on a Toulouse-Paris TGV had to be stopped at Agen station before being taken back to Toulouse, from where they departed for Tarbes and then Paris.

Traffic between Bordeaux and Agen was only able to resume at the end of the day, at reduced speed, on Sunday. “Service will not return to normal before Monday morning, as repairs must be carried out overnight,” said the SNCF, which had announced earlier in the day that “all Bordeaux-Toulouse tickets will be cancelled and refundable free of charge.”
