At dawn on Thursday 20th November operation” Ipogeo” orchestrated by the Prosecutor’s Office of Catania, was set in motion with raids in Catania, Palermo, Messina, Siracusa and Bari. Three of the sixteen comrades under investigation are in prison. The allegations against them concern what took place in Catania last May 17 against the Decreto Sicurezza. [Security Decree]. Disruption of public service, defacement, bodily harm, robbery and devastation and looting, are the main charges against the sixteen comrades.
The retrieval of ‘devastation and looting’, a crime introduced with the Rocco Code during the twenty years of fascism and dusted off and cleared through customs from the G8 of Genoa onwards, is entirely strategic. Its extreme ambiguity allows it to be applied in the most disparate contexts, making it a perfect deterrent for marches and demonstrations that have no intention of re-entering the conciliation enclosures, those not content with mere walks and indeed express a solid political antagonism in the streets. Moreover, the severity of the sentences (from eight to fifteen years) that this charge foresees makes it an ideal means for terrorising and repressing conflictuality. To make the picture even bleaker it contributes to the wide use of the device of complicity, also widely extended to a good number of the comrades under investigation in operation Ipogeo. It is an article of the Penal Code that strikes whoever is considered materially or morally complicit in the charges, with the same sentence.
For the Police Headquarters the press have been another opportunity to vomit the usual rhetoric of the good and the bad to public opinion. They repeat that whoever uses practices that go beyond the border of legality is an infiltrator who pollutes just struggles, those surrounded by sincere democrats, so they should be isolated.
The march at the centre of the operation, that went through Catania going passed the prison of Piazza Lanza, was opposing the Security Decree, yet another instrument with which State and bosses have armed themselves against the oppressed and exploited. The so-called Decreto Sicurezza, become law in June, with its nauseating collection of new offences and aggravations foresees even more prison for the excluded and those who rebel against the present state of things. The comrades arrested and under investigation opposed themselves to these measures and have been struck by the repression. It is now essential not to abandon them, demonstrating our closeness, support and solidarity.
When the level of the clash goes down, repression has free reign. In the face of the repressive crackdown the only way to resist is to not bow down to the rules of the enemy, but give strength to and nourish our practices by reacting against isolation. The recent squares in solidarity with the resistance of the Palestinian people also demonstrated it: not accepting the limits imposed by the new Security Decree makes it more difficult for the State and its gendarmes to apply it.
