Today (Friday 31 October 2025) 5:40 in the morning, a vast police operation against anarchist structures took place in the Cretan town of Heraklion. The Evangelismos squat and private dwellings were stormed by special forces and a number of people have been arrested.
The State’s attack took place following an action carried out by anarchists against the recently revoked Greek minister Makis Voridis of the party in power, Nea Dimokratia. The latter had been discovered and confronted a few days ago in a restaurant in Heraklion, after which he must have fled. Following this, the party in power announced reprisals.
Makis Voridis’s past as street nazi with close contacts with the Greek junta and his putschist boss Georgios Papadopoulos is also known for his antisemitism, his pro-Israel and extremely xenophobic politics these past few years while minister for migration and asylum.
The popularity of this anarchist intervention against Voridis is also due to the circumstances in which he resigned from his position as minister this summer. The European public prosecution had recently opened an investigation on fraud, in which the ministry of rural development and food supply, which he was head of as minister from 2019 to 2021, plays an essential role. The Opekepe scandal reveals to Greek public opinion yet again how politicians enrich themselves personally beyond all measure. They had obtained enormous subventions through private networks. These had been requested for agricultural land that didn’t exist, situated on the site of an airport or in the water, notably in Crète.
The vengeance of the clique of Nea Dimokratia against the anarchist movement has therefore been revived after the intervention against Voridis. Moreover we are commemorating the anniversary of the death of the anarchist guerrilla Kyriakos Xymitiris. The raid also aims to intervene in the commemoration and demonstrate his determination to fight with every form of resistance.
At the moment we don’t know if the police will use the assault on the Evaggelismos squat to evict it. At the present time the house is occupied by the police and many people have been detained. Supporters have already arrived in the street and the gathering for Kyriakos Xymitiris, planned for this evening, should go ahead.
