Hi everyone: the updates that are reaching us about the comrade Alfredo Cospito’s situation convey a clear worsening of the already aberrant conditions of imprisonment under 41-bis.

Over a few months Alfredo has been facing a progressive limitation in the already demanding possibilities of surviving under the prison regime that he has been assigned to since 2022, among which an almost total block on correspondence to and from outside, impossibility of access to the prison library (an authorisation that Alfredo received from the prison management), a block on books regularly acquired in a bookshop through the prison (according to the 41-bis regime) and other goods, such as flour or clothing, for daily use.

All this, it just so happens, coincides with the undersecretary for justice Delmastro’s first grade sentence for revelation of official secrecy (i.e., for the affair of ambient wiretapping of conversations between Alfredo and the other prisoners who belonged to his “sociality group”, divulged in Parliament by Donzelli). Other “coincidences” one might think would bear weight in this matter are the resignation at the end of last December of the director of the DAP, Giovanni Russo, who had testified not exactly in favour of Delmastro in the trial against him and, again it just so happens, the return of Bancali of the GOM graduates to the command of the 41-bis section, who had been transferred precisely due to his involvement in the wiretapping affair.

We are therefore relaunching the appeal that we issued last year regarding correspondence addressed to Alfredo, as a first step for mobilisation to regain incisiveness and constancy to wrest Alfredo from isolation and continue to struggle against life imprisonment and 41-bis.

LET’S KEEP WRITING TO ALFREDO!

It is very important to keep writing to the comrade Alfredo Cospito, still in 41bis in the prison of Bancali (Sassari). The painstaking (and often frankly incomprehensible and contradictory) work of the censorship bureau, together with the sloppiness typical of the country’s prisons and the unreliability of the Italian postal service (increasingly the sole means of prisoner communications), makes it strongly recommended to send correspondence via traceable systems such as registered mail (even without acknowledgement of receipt) or “Posta 1”. The coupon and the tracking code make it possible to find out the status of the consignment and undertake the bureaucratic process of trying to unblock the mail, as guards do not always disclose what is being withheld and mail often simply disappears.

We therefore invite all those in solidarity to write and send scans or photos of the receipts (or at least traceable post codes) to the Cassa Antirep [Anti-repression fund] of the Alpi Occidentali [Western Alps], who will be in charge of collecting them and sending them to Alfredo’s lawyer to make the necessary appeals and recover as many letters as possible.
Solidarity is a concrete act, we will never leave Alfredo alone in the hands of the State executioners: Let us also shower him with affection through letters and postcards!
