The prison guard school under fire

“They called out before they set the fire”: prison guard school set on fire, 1,000 students evacuated

Le Parisien/Sud Ouest, April 14, 2025

“This is a first in the history of the École nationale d’administration pénitentiaire (Enap),” laments the FO Justice union. At around 11.30pm on Sunday night, arsonists set fire to vehicles parked in the parking lot of the prison guard training center, based in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne). As a result, over 1,000 students had to be evacuated from buildings close to the site of the fire, while the firefighters intervened. All were able to return to their buildings during the night.

On site, the eighteen firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to ten vehicles parked nearby. Two hoses were required. On Monday morning, the Agen police began their investigations. According to the initial information gathered, a criminal investigation is being considered. Ufap Unsa Justice denounced the use of molotov cocktails.

Agen. “Unacceptable violence”, increased police presence: new vehicle fires reignite anger

Sud Ouest, April 14, 2025

On campus, emotions ran high on Monday April 14, following the arson attack on several vehicles belonging to student prison guards, parked outside the École nationale d’administration pénitentiaire in Agen. In the middle of the night, some 1,000 people were evacuated from the buildings near the site of the fire, while the fire-fighting operation continued. Among them, two young women were left feeling unwell.

In all, six cars were completely destroyed by the flames, and two others suffered collateral damage, during this latest episode of arson, following on from those of March 9 and 16. Some twenty vehicles have been targeted in the communes of Agen and Le Passage in recent weeks.

“We’re doing all we can to support the students, both at the police station, where they can lodge a complaint, and in mitigating the consequences of their loss,” says Philippe Claerhout, head of communications at Enap. In addition to having been received by the training management during the day, before a meeting with the school’s director, the victims of these fires have to reorganize their transport arrangements. “We are in the process of adapting the location of training courses for students who find themselves without a car and unable to travel to schools that are too isolated.”

A crisis meeting under the aegis of the prefect was held on Monday, “to plan the reinforcement of security measures in the Agen area”. The use of a security company was agreed, as was the increased presence of municipal police patrols on the outskirts of the campus.

“From the outset, we provided investigators with images from our nearby video-protection cameras, in order to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this criminal act. Thanks to these elements, the investigation was able to move forward without delay”, shared the mayor of Agen, Jean Dionis, in a press release. Although an arrest was made in the immediate aftermath, the man arrested was quickly cleared, as he himself was the victim of the theft of his vehicle.

In a press release, the Agen public prosecutor stated that it was “too early to identify any specific leads, including the motivation of the perpetrator(s). Similarly, there is no evidence to link these acts with the vehicle fires that have occurred in the Agen area in recent weeks. The investigators’ task is therefore to gather evidence, such as forensic reports, witness statements and verification of surveillance footage”, adds Olivier Naboulet.
