The nights of Sunday to Monday, April 14, and Monday to Tuesday, April 15, were marked by attacks on several penitentiary structures and their minions, in a dozen towns in the south of France and the Paris suburbs. Prison staff cars parked in parking lots (Réau, Valence, Villepinte, Aix-Luynes, Nîmes), alongside the national prison school (Agen) or in front of their staff quarters (Marseille, Nanterre) went up in smoke. In addition, the entrance to a prison was machine-gunned (Toulon-La Farlède), and the gate to an ERIS base was set on fire (Aix-Luynes).

This “coordinated attack” over two consecutive nights led the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) to take charge of the investigation, which was then entrusted to the Anti-Terrorist Sub-Directorate of the Judicial Police, local services and the Directorate General of Internal Security (DGSI). The investigation includes “three charges, including terrorist association”, explained the Minister of Justice today, because “the very nature of the action” reflects a “concerted operation aimed at seriously disturbing public order through intimidation”. As for the guards, they are naturally disgusted, as Damien Tripenne, national secretary of the CGT penitentiary union, said on a major radio station: “I have comrades, colleagues, who are devastated because their vehicles have been targeted, their homes have been targeted… fear will have to change sides” (RTL, 15/4).

In addition, the Ministry of the Interior’s spokespersons pointed out that in several places the tag “DDPF” (interpreted by the journalists as the acronym for “rights [or rather defense] of French prisoners”, named after a Telegram channel) was found, as well as “anarchist slogans”. This led them to put forward both “ultra-left groups” and “drug trafficking” in their chatter. A well-known “source close to the case” told a state news agency that “according to the initial elements of the investigation, the anarchist trail seems to be gaining ground in the vast majority of cases” (AFP, 15/4, 15h50).

Whatever the case, their hypothesis is that these attacks are linked to the struggle of some and others against the construction of vast high-security wings, i.e. veritable tombs where hundreds of prisoners will be buried alive from this summer onwards… and more generally against the toughening of prison conditions (reduced walks and activities, beatings and humiliations by screws…) encouraged by Darmanin’s arrival at the Ministry of Justice.

Here, then, is a first glimpse of this series of nocturnal attacks on the prison administration and the property of its staff:

Agen (Lot-et-Garonne), Sunday April 13, 11:30 pm: arson of eight cars belonging to ENAP student guards.

• Agen (Lot-et-Garonne). At around 11:30 pm on Sunday April 13, unidentified assailants drove up to the premises of the École nationale d’administration pénitentiaire (Enap) and set fire to the cars belonging to guards in training. Six of them were completely destroyed by the flames, two others were damaged, and 1,000 student guards were evacuated in the middle of the night to allow the fire department to intervene. A “DDPF” tag was found on the ground.

• Réau (Seine-et-Marne). On the same night, Sunday to Monday, April 14, a female guard’s vehicle was set on fire in the prison parking lot, and traces of hydrocarbons were found on three other guard vehicles, which had not caught fire.

Valence (Drôme), Sunday April 13, 9:45pm: arson of two guard’s cars in the parking lot of the prison.

• Valence (Drôme). On the same night, Sunday to Monday, April 14, at around 9:45pm, two guard vehicles were set on fire in the prison parking lot, by an unknown arsonist who had arrived and left on a scooter. He poured petrol over them, then set fire to them and sprayed “DDPF” on them.

Villepinte (Seine-Saint-Denis), Monday April 14, 10:30 pm: arson of three guard’s cars in the parking lot of the prison.

• Villepinte (Seine-Saint-Denis). On the following night, Monday April 14, at around 10.30pm, three prison staff cars were set on fire, two parked in the visitors’ parking lot and one in the staff parking lot. Two unidentified assailants entered the compound via an earth mound, setting fire to one vehicle each, while the third was hit by the fire’s spread.

Aix-Luynes (Bouches-du-Rhône), Tuesday April 14th, 2 a.m.: two cars set on fire in the parking lot of La Taule.

• Aix-Luynes (Bouches-du-Rhône). Shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday night (April 15), two cars (one a guard’s car, the other belonging to a prisoner on semi-release) were destroyed in the prison parking lot. In addition, the door to the base of the Pôle de rattachement des extractions judiciaires et de l’Équipe régionale d’intervention et de sécurité (PREJ-ERIS) was set on fire.

Marseilles (Bouches-du-Rhône), Monday April 14, 12:50 a.m.: fire in one of the henchmen’s cars and tagging of ten others in the parking lot of their residence.

• Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). On the night of Monday to Tuesday, April 15, shortly before 1 a.m., a car was set on fire and a dozen others tagged with the words “DDPF” in the parking lot of the “Domaine des Chutes Lavies” residence, located at 9 impasse Sylvestre in the 13ᵉ arrondissement, and housing prison guards. This residence is also located close to the premises of the Protection Judiciaire de la Jeunesse (PJJ).

• Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine). At around 8pm on Monday April 14, two unidentified men on scooters set fire to the car of a prison warden. The car was parked in a space reserved for staff in front of the screws’ quarters. The two arsonists wrote the acronym “DDPF” on the ground before leaving the scene. A can of petrol was found nearby.

Toulon-La Farlède (Var), Monday April 14, midnight: the front door of the prison was hit by 15 bullets, one of which landed in the armored glass of the guardhouse just behind it.

• Toulon-La Farlède (Var). On Monday night, April 15, at around 12:40 a.m., the front door of the prison was riddled with 15 bullet holes from a Kalashnikov. One of the bullets managed to pass through the prison’s front door, nestling in the glass of the reception area where a female guard was standing. A large “DDFM” tag was found on the machine-gunned entrance to the prison.

• Nîmes (Gard). On the night of Monday to Tuesday, April 15, at around 9pm, a BMW was set on fire in front of the prison, and tongues of flame were graffitied by several masked people, while the tag “DDPF” was written on the surrounding wall. The day before, 8 vehicles had already burned down at around 2:30 a.m. in the Toyota dealership next to the prison…
