On February 15, anarchist comrade Salvatore Vespertino (Ghespe), who had been a fugitive for the last 2 years or so, was arrested in Madrid. According to the regime, his arrest was the result of cooperation between the authorities of various countries, including Greece.
The comrade was transferred to Italy on March 4th, initially to the Rebibbia prison in Rome and is currently imprisoned in Spoleto prison of Spoleto. In the early days of his detention in Spain, Ghespe was subjected to pressure and harassment by guards. At Rebibbia, the correspondence wasn’t delivered to him; visits and phone calls were not allowed until shortly before his transfer to the prison of Spoleto.
He was sentenced to 8 years in prison on charges of possession, manufacture and transport of an explosive device, grievous bodily harm and damage in the context of the Panico operation in 2017 in Florence. More specifically, he is accused of an improvised explosive device that was placed outside a fascist bookstore in Florence on New Year’s Day 2017.The device exploded in the hands of a pyrotechnics cop who did not even follow safety protocols, resulting in the loss of an arm and an eye.
The comrade was convicted on the sole evidence of a DNA test that was carried out in a haphazard manner and cannot be repeated. It is not the first time that DNA mixtures are used as evidence of the incrimination of activists by the authorities, while methods such as the above are questioned by science itself. These analyses are carried out in the laboratories of the cops and the respective police authority, with all that this implies in terms of the reliability of the results, not giving the persecuted the opportunity for re-examination.
For our part, we stand in unnegotiable solidarity with the comrade who is imprisoned in the cells of democracy. No matter how much power mobilizes its various mechanisms to imprison and isolate comrades, to neutralize and suppress struggles, to sow fear, it will find us against it.
As states arm themselves with new repressive means, they strengthen interstate agreements for the protection of capital and their own existence. For as long as they attempt to eliminate every trace of resistance from struggling individuals, we must show our internationalist solidarity and not forget any prisoner.
From Italy’s repeated crackdowns against squatters and anarchist comrades to Germany’s ongoing witch hunts against anti-fascists and former members of armed organizations, we will always be on the side of those who struggle, and rebel.
FROM GREECE TO ITALY, A MULTIFORM STRUGGLE TO DESTROY EVERY FORM OF AUTHORITY
SOLIDARITY WITH THE ANARCHIST COMRADE GHESPE
FIRE TO ALL CELLS
UNTIL TOTAL LIBERATION
