Sète (Herault), France : 11th May: A third of those being held escaped from detention centre

A large-scale escape took place during the night of Friday 10th to Saturday 11th May, at the Administrative Detention Centre (CRA) of Sète. In fact, ten people managed to escape from the surveillance of the border police, the authority that handles this establishment situated at 15 quai Maillol, and then took advantage of the night to escape at around 2.30am. A significant event for this small centre, which has only 28 places.

According to a police source, in order to escape individuals pulled the vent from one of the rooms to access the attic. Once in the attic, they lifted up the tiles and jumped on to the roof to go down into the street below.

Guards of the centre were sent to Sète railway station to see if the individuals on the run were there. In parallel, searches are being carried out in the area. As a reminder, the last escape had taken place in April 2023. At the time, six people escaped after taking advantage of a faulty door lock.

Of the ten illegal foreigners who escaped in the night of 10th to 11th May, four have been retaken by the police.

A fourth individual who escaped from the administrative detention centre of Sète was recaptured on Thursday 16th of May. According to our information, this foreign national in the French territory in an irregular situation was arrested at the home of an acquaintance, in Draguignan in the Var, by police officers assigned to public safety. Placed in custody for evasion of an administrative measure with burglary, they should be presented before the public prosecutor in the coming days.

In the night of 10th to 11th May ten people had managed to escape from the CRA of Sète by going over the roofs. Two were arrested at Saint-Roch station, in Montpellier a few hours after their escape, and sentenced to eight months’ prison. A third managed to escape after kicking a police officer in the face while climbing a fence. The latter was also retaken, near Montbéliard.

Following the escape, all the accused have been registered in the wanted list and their photographs have been sent to police and gendarmerie services.
