Munich : another attack on a city construction site

At around 4 a.m. on Friday November 10, Munich firefighters arrived a little late at Johanneskirchen Straße. There, an excavator and a dump truck, located on the tramway construction site run by the municipal public transport company MVG (Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft), were burning up.

The two construction machines were destroyed, with the flames causing damage estimated at 300,000 euros. The fact that they were separated by several meters, leading investigators to suspect the existence of several sources of ignition, prompted the Munich Criminal Police and the State Protection Service (Staatsschutz) to take over the investigation.

While the local Bavarian press is sounding the alarm as usual (based on “Is there an incendiary devil in Munich?”, which is nicely called Feuerteufel), it has taken the opportunity to remind us that “unknown people are attacking geothermal installations, construction machinery and bridges”, gracing us with a little chronology running over the last four years, which we reproduce below.


Munich and surrounding area. A non-exhaustive list of sabotage incidents (usually anonymous) against communications, energy and transport infrastructures collected by the Bavarian press on the occassion of the tramway construction project arson (November 2023):
• On March 12, 2019, Vodafone telecommunications cables were set on fire on the John Kennedy Bridge.
• On December 19, 2019, Vodafone and municipal services fiber-optic cables on the Leinthal and Herzog-Heinrich bridges were set on fire.
• On February 19, 2020, the housings of an antennas was set on fire in the Perlach forest.
• On May 22, 2020, the Bavarian Radio tower was set on fire during the night.
• July 8, 2020, an antenna is set on fire on the Place Theodor-Heuss in the Neuperlach district.
• May 21, 2021, around 50 medium-voltage power cables were set ablaze at a construction site belonging to the municipal energy company.
• August 2021, 350 meters of a gravel pit conveyor belt are set on fire in Plannegg, near the Kasten forest estate.
• On November 3, 2021, buildings, a conveyor belt and several pieces of gravel pit equipment were set on fire in Oberhaching.
• On July 25, 2022, five trucks, five trailers, an excavator and 25 drums of fiber optic cable were burned at a storage site in the Obersendling district.
• On May 26, 2023, 26 drums of fiber optic cable were set on fire at a construction site in the Harlaching district.
• On June 9, 2023, a Telekom antenna was set on fire in the Waldtrudering district.
• On July 8, 2023, telecoms cable ducts and an excavator were set on fire along the Herzog-Heinrich bridge.
• On July 16, 2023, an antenna was set on fire in Forstenrieder Park.
• On July 26, 2023, several pieces of equipment were set alight on the site of the Pôle Scientifique subway railway in Plannegg.
• August 16, 2023, an asphalt mixing machine is set on fire at the A94 freeway construction site near Anzing.
• October 23, 2023, a geothermal pipeline under construction is set on fire in Grünwald.
• On October 28, 2023, a railway crane mounted on a train was set on fire on the outskirts of Unterföhring.
