Alfredo Cospito and Anna Beniamino have been sentenced to 23 years and 17 years and 9 months

Pending a more detailed text about the hearing, we are transmiting that on June 26 the Court of Appeal of Turin established the length of the convictions against the anarchists Anna Beniamino and Alfredo Cospito in the Scripta Manent trial, sentencing them to 17 years and 9 months and 23 years respectively. The possibility of a life sentence requested by the prosecutor of Turin during the appeal hearing of 5th December 2022 and subsequently in the latter of 19th and 26th June has therefore definitively been excluded for Alfredo, (while for Anna a conviction of 27 years and one month had been requested).

We recall that during the Scripta Manent trial — in addition to accusations of subversive association with the purpose of terrorism or subversion of the democratic order, attack with terrorist aims, criminal incitement aggravated by terrorist aims, etc. — several accusations and convictions for massacre concerning Anna and Alfredo were to follow, first concerning the action in the bourgeois neighbourhood of the Crocetta (Turin, 2007) and later for the action against the Carabinieri Students Barracks (Fossano, 2006). With the requalification, by the court of cassation (6th July 2022), of the conviction for massacre against public safety (art. 422 c. p.) to massacre against the security of the State (art. 285 c. p.), the comrade risked a life sentence due to the prevalence of repeated relapse on attenuating factors. The law establishing the obligation of life imprisonment was subsequently amended by the Constitutional Court with the hearing on 18th April: not a “victory” of the rule of law or a “return” to the principles of the Constitution, but a result achieved by the hunger strike against 41 bis and life imprisonment and by the international solidarity movement that developed between May 2022 and April 2023.
