In the dawn of Friday 31/07 we carried out an artistic intervention at the abomination-billboard on the highway of Larnaca-Limassol. Said billboard, of the sellout and now at the target company Niche Billboard, was part of the electoral campaign of the war criminal Gadi Eisenkot, written in hebrew to target israeli tourists and residents of our island.
Eisenkot, despite being a supposed opposition power to the genocidal demon Netanyahu, remains a force of evil that needs to be erased from the face of the earth, since not only did he serve as chief of staff to the occupational military forces, he is also the architect of the terrorist ‘dahiye doctrine’, a military system of war promoting disproportionate violence and complete destruction.As individuals with conscience, with solidarity to our neighbouring and tortured peoples of Palestine and Lebanon, and with an unwavering refusal to let the further normalisation of zionazi propaganda in our island, we decided to send a clear response. With our ropes, our paints, our hatred and our solidarity, we painted over the advertising monstrosity with the colours of the Palestinian flag that now constitute an international symbol of the oppressed.
Although the covering of that revolting ugliness with something more beautiful and the economic cost to Niche billboards can be seen by themselves as ‘cause for celebration’, the quintessential purpose of our action was less for its material imprint and more so for its statement: to the zionist auspicious colonisers, as well as their Cypriot politicians and capitalist partners, we say clearly, we will resist your every step.
This land and this soil belongs to its cats and moufflons, to its carob trees and cedars, to the workers and people that watches over them, not to your parasitic and ecocidal clan. To the Cypriot society we want to promote a message of hopeful resistance in this geopolitical climate of despair. It’s time we get over this passive and fatalist mentality of ‘stay quiet and let this pass’, and in case this hasn’t happened already, to stop expecting from the corrupt and sold-out at the altar of capital politicians to save the place that they themselves are destroying. Authority may lie in their blood-soaked hands but true power lies in ours, in our numbers, in our spirit, in our connection to our land, in our solidarity.
Without trying to make any baseless comparison between the situations in Cyprus and Palestine nor any predictions of the future, we remind and reflect on the historical developments that preceded the colonial takeover of Palestine, where we observe how the zionists followed a similar strategy: Mass arrivals/settlements in the country, buying out land, huge investments, political influence, closed off communities, secret ‘security’ teams, were some of the early stages that eventually led to the Nakba of ‘48, stages that we are already experiencing in Cyprus.
As we also remind that Cyprus was one of the main suggested places by zionist leaders for the establishment of their state, basing it in ancient jewish connections to the island and proximity to the ‘promised land’, arguments that are still used to this day by israeli tourist and investment carriers as well as expansionist extremists that seek to include our island to the plan of ‘greater israel’.
Zionism, and specifically in its ethnostatist form, remain the sharpest end of the imperialist spear, its worst symptom, its most violent manifestation, and for many people the most immediate enemy. Although, it’s the main cause for some of the biggest problems of our time, we simultaneously recognise that it remains a (albeit the main) symptom of the global systems of exploitative authority, and that a truly liberated world only through our opposition and their collapse, whether it is statism, capitalism, colonialism, imperialism, or religion authority, patriarchy, and white supremancy. We congrats every people, every community, every individual, who struggles by any means possible against the systems of unfairness and towards its libertarian values.
