Prosfygika is the living, collective space where everyday life is rearranged in terms of solidarity and self-organization. People of different ages, and political and social backgrounds from all over the world, have transformed the spaces into communal kitchens, self-managed social and mental care structures, a hostel for relatives of cancer patients, a health structure, an animal structure, children’s hangouts and workshops.

Where the market wants housing and social needs as a commodity, the community creates relationships that covered and continue to cover practical needs: housing, care, building maintenance, free spaces, mutual aid. Where capitalism produces impoverishment and loss, self-organization from below provides the answer. This very practice functions as proof that collective organization from below is feasible and functional as an everyday, manageable reality that give protection and life. Where there would be dozens of homeless people, refugees, immigrants, drug addicts, and the poor in general, the community provides the answer.

Now we need to stand together, all of us, alongside our comrades who are risking their health and lives, to press and organize joint actions on the streets, in neighborhoods and in decision-making centers, in order to force the Region and the involved bodies to revoke decisions that threaten the community. Defending prosfigika is defending life, dignity and the ability to organize from below. A victory is a victory for all, everything and everyone who experience rent pressure, wage cuts, surveillance and the criminalization of solidarity. Struggles have meaning and now action is required to save lives and keep alive the prospect of another, collective imaginary.
