South Drôme: three wind turbines damaged by fire still out of service

Three wind turbines at the wind farm in Roussas, in southern Drôme, were deliberately damaged by fire during the night of Wednesday to Thursday [September 4]. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but this is not the first time that a facility has been targeted in the department.
It had been several years since such an act of vandalism targeting wind turbines had taken place in the Drôme department. During the night between Wednesday and Thursday, one or more individuals broke into the Claves wind farm in Roussas, in the south of the department, and set fire to the bases of three wind turbines (the farm has six in total). In the morning, the operator noticed the damage and notified the gendarmerie. The company RES, which operates the farm, confirmed on Monday that the wind turbines have been taken out of service since the fire and that damage assessment is underway.
The gendarmerie’s criminal investigation unit has been called in, and the Pierrelatte investigation brigade is in charge of the investigation. In January 2019, wind turbines in Roussas were damaged by arson. The previous year, in Marsanne, a wind turbine was destroyed in the same way. A few days later, responsibility for the act was claimed on a libertarian website in order to “combat domination.” To our knowledge, no one has claimed responsibility for the damage that occurred on Thursday, September 4.
