FREEDOM TO ALFREDO COSPITO

FIRE TO 41 BIS AND ALL FORMS OF INCARCERATION

Alfredo Cospito is an anarchist who has always been active in the frontline of struggles. He was never willing to compromise nor to give up. He is a comrade who has been fighting since the end of the 80’s, a period during which he was imprisoned as a total conscientious objector (for refusing to serve mandatory military services).

Alfredo has always been active in defending comrades affected by repression, in every corner of the world. He has been contributing for many years with articles, editorial projects and proposals to the international anarchist discussion/debate. For this reason, he has been censored many times and his communication with the “outside world” has been forbidden. He has been in prison for 10 years (since 2012), during which he was in High Security prison sectors until he was transferred to 41bis inMay 2022, from Terni prison to Bankali prison in Sassari.

The 41bis prison regime entails 24/7 electronic surveillance, 1 person per cell of 2×3 meters, 1 hour per day for socializing in a group of 4 people (the seperation into these groups is decided directly by the bureaucrats in Rome and is valid for several months), 1 visit per month of 1 hour with no physical contact, separation with glass divider, under electronic surveillance, with audio and video recording (only if the family members are unable to visit, a monthly 10-minute phone call is allowed as an alternative, but to do so, the prisoner’s family member must go to a police station or in some prison), no physical contact, censorship and control of written material, presence at court only through video-conferences.

Under the 41bis there are currently 750 people. Among them, three of the Red Brigades (BR-PCC) captive members for more than 17 years (NadiaLioce, Roberto Morandi, Marco Mezzasalma). In 2009, comrade Diana Blefari, from the same organization, committed suicide after living in this hard prison regime.

Alfredo, once again, has not been submitted to the policies of the Italian State. On October 20th, 2022, he began a hunger strike until the end, as an ultimate form of struggle, for the end of the 41bis prison regime for all prisoners and any other form of life imprisonment (‘ergastolo ostativo’). His struggle is literally for all those who fight from/against the prison complex system.

It is a polymorphic struggle that does not negotiate with reformistic, institutional, peaceful conciliations, that does not kneel before laws, that is doubting the ‘existing one’ and promotes its total destruction. This struggle is against the state and the capital, the capitalism and the socialism, the democracies and the dictatorships, the domination of science and the academics of fear – whether they were uniforms or not -, the modern civilization and the religion, the eco-compatible commodities and the nuclear industries, the improved technological tools for control, detention and surveillance.

The repressive decadence that is enforced by the Italian State affects everyone, since such a precedent in the heart of Europe could be a precursor to further repressive steps in other geographical territories. This is happening, while the social, economic, international military crisis is getting worse by day. We know that these are the ideal grounds for the governments to apply authoritarian practices around the world.

In Greece, the new Penal Code is only a part of all policies that are butchering achievements of decades’ fights and is fully aligned with the dogma of toughening up prison sentences and dehumanization of the imprisoned. Even if the cells are modernising, they still remain monuments of barbarism. The fight against this brutality starts from the total destruction of the prison-society until the destruction of the last cage.

In a further attempt to connect the Italian with the Greek state and the implications of the policies of local and international capital, it is worth mentioning the following: Alfredo Cospito was accused and convicted for claiming responsibility for the shooting of the company’s CEO of nuclear power industry AnsaldoNucleare, Roberto Adinolfi, in 2012 in Genoa.

The first (of the three different contractors for different sections of the central axis Athens-Thessaloniki-Promahonas) contract of 2007 concerned the equipping of the trains with the ETCS system: the equipment was assigned to the italian company Ansaldo (subsequently acquired by the japanese colossus Hitachi ) with an initial budget of 25 million euros. The project, after repeated delays and extensions, was finally completed in mid-2018 and after two impairments of physical object and money had been imposed on the contract, as Ansaldo did not meet its contractual obligations. After pains and sufferings, that is, the italian company equips 88 against 114 trains that it had undertaken for 21 million euros. However, these systems also remain inactive as they are assembled upon completion of the installation and on the lines. As a result, we mourn today dozens of dead people in the premeditated murder in Tempi.

How much our lives really worth? How much do we have to shout to say the obvious: That, for the states and the capital we are expendable objects either in the structures of confinement or outside of them?

Delusions are shattered. We are in a situation in which we must fight for our lives by putting ourselves on the line for claiming our subversive and revolutionary values. Every field of struggle must sharpen resistances against the extortionists of our dreams and the slaughterers of our lives. The struggle of the anarchist Alfredo Cospito and those of all free people around the world demonstrate the hypocrisy of the rulers and claim another world. A world where respect for dignity, solidarity and freedom are not words on dusty parchments but a way of life.

We stand adamantly on his side, on the side of those who struggle against the state and the capital. We are non-negotiable in the fight against every form of power and confinement. Against death, forward for life.

No matter how much our souls may bear the loss of yet another companion, we should always remember that the odds were, are and will be against us. And that has not for a moment made us question our commitment in this fight. Because we simply could not exist otherwise. This is the proud and admirable fight he is standing for.

Cause it is the desperate and the frustrated romantics who become the biggest savages in the war of denial and revenge, of attack. When we lose everything, all the illusions of the world of glass, we have our lives in our hands. And the last grains of sand in the hourglass of the partner’s life build our own complicity in his struggle and shake the foundations of their palaces.

For every possible reason in the world, well…

No retreat – No truce. First and always for Anarchy.

Let the will of destruction never again become a creator.

Nothing needs to be built.

Let the direct action speak, right now, immediately.
