On COP26
Between the 31st of October and the 12th of November, representatives of state and capital are going to descend upon Glasgow in the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference(COP26). If we look at previous and historical UN attempts to “tackle” climate change, all we can find is three decades of inaction and greenwashing. There is no evidence that COP26 will be any different; in fact, this conference seems to be reaching new heights of hypocrisy, smugness and arrogance.
While pushing the myth of “green energy” throughout messaging around COP26, the UK state is attempting to open a massive new oil field in the sea north of Scotland. While maintaining a thin facade of inclusivity, the conference is excluding, through COVID restrictions which prevent them from ever reaching negotiations, the voices of those most impacted by the ecocidal policies of state and capital. While those most responsible for the climate catastrophe sit cosily in their conference centres, the people of Glasgow will have to put up with the militarisation of our streets and neighbourhoods at an unprecedented scale, as police from all over the UK infest our city. These are only some of the thousands of hypocrisies we will no doubt see around COP26. How can we expect such a conference to change anything when its largest monetary sponsors are Scotland’s largest polluters?
COP26, for us, is nothing but another attempt by international capitalism to defang and appropriate the climate struggle, greenwash its greatest ecocidal excesses and ensure its proliferation, by turning yet another crisis into a profit source – with the rest of us bearing the cost.
We are, therefore, highly doubtful of its ability to yield any positive climate action, never mind to “save the world”.
Radical resistance in Glasgow
Unfortunately, gone are the days of the Red Clydeside, of the tens of thousands amassed at the Battle of George Square (although we wouldn’t be surprised if the British state pulled out the tanks for COP). Gone, also, are the days where we could establish rolling blockades against G8 summits in Scotland, at the peak of the anti-globalisation movement in 2005 . At the moment, radical forces in Glasgow are few and far between, with the milieu rendered weak by repression and burnout. Every now and then, however, one sees glimmers of hope, most recently the resistance to an anti-immigrant raid in the Pollokshields area in May 2021, which saw a spontaneous reaction from a few neighbours become a successful anti-eviction action by hundreds.
There have been protests planned for the COP26 conference, mostly by coalitions of activists, trade unions and NGOs; we hope that, within and outside of these protests, we will find a place for subversive, direct action. We hope that we will see in praxis the tension between destruction and creation located in the libertarian tradition so many decades ago.

The climate catastrophe is a global phenomenon, which impacts each and every one of us deeply and diversely.We call for two weeks of international solidarity through subversive action, between the 31st of October and 12th of November, especially focused on the 6th of November, the Global Day of Action called by the COP26 Coalition. From banner drops, discussions and film screenings to protests, clashes and sabotage, support your comrades in Glasgow and around the world by resisting.

Siamo un gruppo di amici, compagni e complici che si stanno organizzando a vario titolo a Glasgow, in Scozia.
Sulla COP26
Tra il 31 ottobre e il 12 novembre, i rappresentanti dello stato e del capitale scenderanno a Glasgow per la 26a Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sui cambiamenti climatici (COP26). Se guardiamo ai precedenti e storici tentativi delle Nazioni Unite di “affrontare” il cambiamento climatico, tutto quello che possiamo trovare sono tre decenni di inazione e di greenwashing. Non ci sono prove che la COP26 sarà diversa; infatti, questa conferenza sembra raggiungere nuove vette di ipocrisia, compiacimento e arroganza.
Mentre promuove il mito dell’”energia verde” in tutta la messaggistica intorno alla COP26, lo stato britannico sta tentando di aprire un nuovo enorme campo petrolifero nel mare a nord della Scozia. Pur mantenendo una sottile facciata di inclusività, la conferenza sta escludendo, attraverso le restrizioni COVID che impediscono loro di raggiungere i negoziati, le voci di coloro che sono maggiormente colpiti dalle politiche ecocide dello stato e del capitale. Mentre i maggiori responsabili della catastrofe climatica siedono comodamente nei loro centri congressi, la gente di Glasgow dovrà sopportare la militarizzazione delle nostre strade e dei nostri quartieri su una scala senza precedenti, mentre la polizia di tutto il Regno Unito infesta la nostra città. Queste sono solo alcune delle migliaia di ipocrisie che senza dubbio vedremo intorno alla COP26. Come possiamo aspettarci che una tale conferenza cambi qualcosa quando i suoi maggiori sponsor monetari sono i maggiori inquinatori della Scozia?
La COP26, per noi, non è altro che un altro tentativo del capitalismo internazionale di appropriarsi della lotta per il clima, di rendere verdi i suoi più grandi eccessi ecocidi e assicurarne la proliferazione, trasformando l’ennesima crisi in una fonte di profitto – mentre noi ne subiamo il costo.
Siamo quindi molto dubbiosi sulla sua capacità di produrre una qualsiasi azione positiva sul clima, per non parlare di “salvare il mondo”.
Resistenza radicale a Glasgow
Purtroppo, sono finiti i giorni del Red Clydeside (epoca del radicalismo politico di Glasgow, che durò dal 1910 fino all’inizio del 1930 NdT*), delle decine di migliaia di persone ammassate nella battaglia di George Square (anche se non saremmo sorpresi se lo stato britannico tirasse fuori i carri armati per la COP). Sono finiti anche i giorni in cui potevamo istituire dei blocchi mobili contro i vertici del G8 in Scozia, all’apice del movimento anti-globalizzazione nel 2005. Al momento, le forze radicali a Glasgow sono poche e lontane tra loro, con l’ambiente reso debole dalla repressione e dalla stanchezza. Di tanto in tanto, tuttavia, si vedono barlumi di speranza, più recentemente la resistenza a un raid anti-immigrati nella zona di Pollokshields nel maggio 2021, che ha visto una reazione spontanea di alcuni vicini trasformarsi in un’azione anti-sgombero di centinaia di persone.
Ci sono state proteste pianificate per la conferenza della COP26, per lo più da coalizioni di attivisti, sindacati e ONG; speriamo che, all’interno e all’esterno di queste proteste, troveremo posto per un’azione sovversiva e diretta. Speriamo di vedere nella prassi la tensione tra distruzione e creazione presente nella tradizione libertaria di alcuni decenni fa.

La catastrofe climatica è un fenomeno globale, che ha un impatto profondo e diversificato su ognuno di noi. Invitiamo a due settimane di solidarietà internazionale attraverso l’azione sovversiva, tra il 31 ottobre e il 12 novembre, con particolare attenzione al 6 novembre, la giornata globale di azione indetta dalla Coalizione COP26. Dall’affiggere striscioni, discussioni e proiezioni di film a proteste, scontri e sabotaggi, sostenete i vostri compagni di Glasgow e nel mondo resistendo.
