Santiago: Alfredo out of 41 bis! Protest outside the Italian embassy in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike for 107 days (3 February 2023)

On February 3rd 2023, at over 100 days’ hunger strike of the comrade Alfredo Cospito against the brutal isolation of 41 bis in the cells of Italy, about 50 of us called a protest in front of the Italian embassy in order to put internationalist solidarity into practice.

The anarchist and subversive prisoners in the Chilean prisons have started a fast in solidarity with Alfredo’s hunger strike. In this context and despite the considerable presence of police armed with water cannon and tear gas, we managed to push our way in front of the walls protecting the representatives of the Italian government, the same government that is currently taking the assassination of Alfredo upon itself behind the bars.

Posters and Agitation in the Streets of Santiago in Response to the International Call for Alfredo Cospito

Responding to the international call for mobilization in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito’s hunger strike against the disgusting 41bis and life imprisonment, the early morning of January 25 we went out to walk the streets of the center of the capital with propaganda and paste to spread information about Alfredo’s situation.

We also took advantage of the occasion to agitate for the subversive prisoner Marcelo Villarroel and the anti-speciesist comrades of the Susaron case.

A más de 100 días del inicio de la huelga de hambre de Alfredo Cospito, extendemos el llamado a todas las individualidades, grupos,
organizaciones y colectivos afines a convocar dentro de sus territorios a una movilización a las afueras de las embajadas italianas para presionar al Estado italiano y a lxs verdugxs de Alfredo.
El compañero está muriendo porque el Estado quiere que muera. Esto no es solamente un problema ‘humanitario’, la lucha del compañero es un llamado a la acción revolucionaria internacional. La indiferencia y la pasividad nunca serán nuestras aliadas; la solidaridad si.

Como bien se le expresó en una carta con una bala al periódico italiano “Il Terreno”: “Si Alfredo Cospito muere todxs lxs jueces son un objetivo”. Hagámosle saber al Estado italiano que si Alfredo muere seremos su peor enemigo.

Lxs compañerxs de Chile y Colombia se harán presentes este viernes 3 de febrero a las afueras de sus embajadas. Esperamos que esta iniciativa se extienda aún más.

We are publishing a short contribution on the demonstration held Saturday 28th January in Rome in solidarity with comrade Alfredo Cospito 101 days from the beginning of the hunger strike.
Near the gathering in piazza Trilussa – which lasted several hours and from which a demonstration had been unable to set off – after some of those present had slipped out of the encirclement, there were some clashes with the repressive forces, they soon found themselves in difficulty due to being partially surrounded and to the determination of comrades to hold the streets (but they managed to stop a comrade near Piazza Trilussa). After the clashes, a demonstration was held in the small streets of Trastevere.

At the end of the demo a few dozen comrades were stopped by the DIGOS, police in riot gear and carabinieri. All 41 people apprehended during the day, taken to the police station and released without restriction from the early hours of Sunday 29, were charged with Article 337 of the Criminal Code (resisting a public official). Below is a brief informative note issued on 29 January itself.

Shouting the whole way with passion and rage, 80 of us marched for over hour out of the town of Martorell, to the two prisons of Brians in the Catalan countryside. With chants, music and fireworks, we let the people held captive know they’re not forgotten, despite all the state’s intentions to isolate them. And through the walls and layers upon layers of fences, they called and whistled back.

The Catalan government want to build two more hellholes in the Zona Franca area of Barcelona by 2027: a 800-person “open regime” men’s prison, and a 600-person women’s prison to replace the existing one of Wad-Ras. Development has been delayed after the discovery of heavy metals in the soil. The government says it wants to develop the women’s prison “from a feminist perspective, describing the plans as “gender sensitive” and supporting “female empowerment”! Here we see the inevitable endgame of leftist politics: prison societies with enhanced perceptions of freedom, built on the dying embers of social war….
