(Chile) Case of the comrade Zukato, and Words of the Mother of Zukato

Case of the comrade Zukato

Saturday, July 22, the comrade Zukato ended up with burns on his body after manipulating an accelerant at the occupation of Aplicación High School, the educational instition that he attends. Due to the seriousness of what happened, he was taken to the emergency room at the Posta Central where he was hospitalized and taken into surgery.

Amid the manipulative practices of the hegemonic press, Zukato’s family made known that around 8:30am on wednesday July 26, the comrade entered the wing for a second time. These interventions, which were very long, were accompanied from the street by students from Tajamar High, L1, Aplicación High and individuals who held vigils across Santiago.

Late on that same Wednesday night, Zukatoś mother was intimidated inside the ex posta central. Despite being authorized by the authorities to move freely through the hospital, not only because her 16-year-old son was gravely injured but also endorsed by the Mila Law (dignified accompaniment law), she was impeded by security guards who obstructed her way to stop her from being able to see Zukato, who was in the wing. In resistance, she defied them, walking down the hallways until more than 10 guards came and physically pushed her out and, in parallel, called carabineros who came quickly to back them up and took her to the police station. After hours, the Carabineros let her go after threatening her.

These situations of permanent harrassment against those who struggle is present in all possible scenarios, against all generations, whether children, mothers, or grandparents. Despite this, solidarity did not cease, and a large march passed through Alameda, where pamphlets and fliers were spread, while his comrades shared some words outside the National Library. Zukato, meanwhile, remains hospitalized, breathing on his own and trying to return to stability little by little, passing from UCI to UTI.

On August 1, he went into surgery at 8:30, this time for specialized and intense procedures.

Words of the Mother of comrade Zukato

August 5, 2023

Dear Comrades:

I’m writing to tell you that physically, Zukato is stable, out of danger, and advancing in his recovery each day. Thank you for each show of solidarity in these days; from long accompaniments outside the hospital, propaganda in the streets, in the territories, and also other neighboring communities. These actions and gestures undoubtedly transform rage and pain into hope.

For decades, the struggle of our youth in secondary schools has demanded dignified conditions to study where the repressive apparatus of the state has only criminalized them, instead of trying to find solutions and establish basic conditions. They have written letters, met with those in power locally without achieving anything. The small advances have been gained from marches, hunger strikes and occupations.

The costs have been extremely high for many of them. Today, they once again call to “resolve the peitions” because all of us dream of a dignified education where schools should be a protection and not a risk. They have also positioned themselves against the system of misery and exploitation, which we have passed down to them, they have situated themselves against repression, violations, child abuse in centers of SENAME [Juvenile Detention] against prison and in favor of freedom.

They have much to teach us. While we the residents, the working class seem to willingly put up with the bad conditions, the rich have never had to worry that their children wouldn’t receive a quality education, rather they’re being trained to rule the world that they leave to them.

Sadly, today in this struggle it was my son Zukato. His rapid recovery is imbued with all of the good vibes, prayers, or thoughts that each of you sent him. We are not alone.

Continue to think of him and support his recovery from wherever you are, however you can.

Class solidarity!!
Thank you very much.
