Bolzano: Declaration at the appeal trial for the Brenner demonstration
Today, February 3rd, the last hearing before the verdict in the appeal trial for the demonstration against borders (Brennero, May 2016) took place in the court of Bolzano. This is the declaration that was read out in court, signed by some twenty accused:

If there is one place where words do not express mere opinions devoid of consequences it is a court. In a few days, in this courtroom, it will be decided whether and for how long our future will be one of bars and prison.
In the repressive doggedness that the various public prosecutors’ offices of this country have long reserved for the anarchist movement – of which the 130 years’ imprisonment dispensed in the first-instance verdict of this trial is a good example – is reaching its peak at the moment. The State seems determined to condemn anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito to death, today on his 107th day of hunger strike to the end against the torture of 41 bis and against life imprisonment without appeal. Alfredo’s determination, on the one hand, and institutional ferocity on the other, decisively overshadow the outcome of this trial and our individual fates.
In a country marked by a long trail of real massacres carried out by apparatuses of the State with the manpower of the neofascists – this is not just a historial truth but also a judicial one –, to be sentenced for “political massacre” are… two anarchists (Alfredo Cospito and Anna Beniamino), for “a massacre without massacre attributed without evidence”. The most odious falsification of anarchist idea and practice, which has put Alfredo in the tomb for the living of 41 bis.
If this is the logic, then they can hand out 130 years’ prison for a demonstration that caused, according the same prosecution, 8,000 euros damage. Coherence as they say is in the whole.
While there is talk of the constitution, the State of law and peace, reality tells us that the democratic governments of the west are taking us right into the conflict with Russia, on a slope at the bottom of which is world war three, with accompanying annihilation of terrestrial life.
The dogged attack on dissent in general and against anarchists in particular is the home front of this war.
41 bis is prison of war.
For this Alfredo’s great courage and the solidarity that he has mustered frighten so much. They are part of that humanity that will never side with the bombs of the NATO, just as our comrades in Russia will never side with those of Putin. While it is up to you to choose whether to join in the chorus of repression that is ever more disproportionate today, our thoughts and hearts are with Alfredo.
