Flames have engulfed the historic Salvo d’Acquisto Carabinieri barracks in Rome. The fire broke out late in the morning of Wednesday 15 December, at around 12.25pm. It affected the upper floor of the building of the Ninth Carabinieri Regiment, the barracks that deals with public order.
The alarm was raised shortly afterwards by the soldiers, who noticed the flames, and the residents, who were alerted by a column of smoke rising into the sky in the neighbourhood. According to Il Messagero, a soldier jumped out of the first floor window of the building to escape the flames, falling back into the arms of his colleagues. One carabiniere was injured, but only slightly. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
