Unknown persons set fire to two police patrol cars in an underground car park in Altena (Märkischer Kreis) on Friday. The fire, which completely destroyed the two vehicles, was discovered at around 12.30 a.m., according to police.
In addition to the police station, the complex also houses shops and flats. The building was largely evacuated, the fire brigade extinguished the fire and pulled the vehicles into the open. No one was injured. All tenants and users of the building were able to return to their rooms after the extinguishing work.
In Altena, which was hit hard by the floods a few weeks ago, there were long traffic jams around the scene of the fire. The Lenneuferstraße was blocked until around 3 pm. Officials estimate the damage at more than 100,000 euros. No information could yet be given on possible damage to the underground car park, they said. The State Security Service in Hagen has taken up the investigation, and witnesses are being sought.

Altena – According to initial information, another patrol car, a Mercedes Vito, was set on fire on Saturday morning, 31 July – this time in the immediate vicinity of the Altena police station on Marktstraße.
The fire was quickly extinguished by police officers themselves with a fire extinguisher before the fire brigade arrived. Police spokesman Christof Hüls was not yet able to give any information about the amount of damage.
