A prisoner barricaded himself on the roof of the prison in Toul

During this Thursday morning, a prisoner barricaded himself on the roof of the prison of Toul, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, as reported by our colleagues of L’Est Républicain. The man finally surrendered late in the afternoon after an intervention unit decided to climb on to the roof – the prisoner had refused to negotiate until then.
“The prisoner went up on to the roof of the detention centre of Toul this morning by accessing scaffolding for the repair work of the roof that is underway,” said the interregional management of prison services of Grand Est. “The tools used during the work were immediately removed by prison officers when he climbed onto the roof,” they said.
The prisoner, who is around thirty years old, ordered the workers to leave the premises when he reached the roof. “We were waiting for a security guard so at first we were not surprised, except that the man was very aggressive so we quickly understood that he was a prisoner. We asked him who he was and he told us that he was a revolutionary and asked us to get off. He seemed excessively angry but lucid,” a worker told L’Est Républicain.
The prisoner spent more than seven hours on the roof. The operation was conducted by the regional intervention and security teams (Eris), which depend on the prison administration.
