Italy: “Steadfastness in revolutionary practice” – Discourse at gatherings outside the prisons of Terni and Spoleto

“Steadfastness in revolutionary practice” – Discourse at gatherings outside the prisons of Terni and Spoleto
(1/11/2022)

We are writing these lines on the occasion of the gatherings planned for 1st November 2022 outside the prisons of Terni and Spoleto in conjunction with the call for struggle launched through the hunger strike by anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito, locked up in the prison of Bancali; a hunger strike which has also been joined by anarchists Juan Sorroche, locked up in the prison of Terni and Ivan Alocco, locked up in the French prison of Villepinte.

The contribution, both theorical and pratical, that some of the imprisoned comrades have given to the anarchist movement throughout the years, and which they continue to give from inside the infamous cages built by the democratic regimes, still finds a way to escape and become uninterrupted, unmediated borderless agitation between the proletariat and the exploited all over the world: from Chile to France, from Spain to Italy.

On the 5th of May 2022, imprisoned anarchist Alfredo Cospito received notification of his transfer from “Maximum Security 2” to “41 bis”. The decree was ordered by former minister of justice Marta Cartabia.

On July 6th 2022, the Court of Cassation requalified the explosive attack against the school of carabinieri of Fossano of June 2006, claimed by Rivolta Anonima e Tremenda / Federazione Anarchica Informale, which the comrades Anna Beniamino and Alfredo Cospito were accused of, as “Political Massacre”, deferring to a worsening calculation of the sentence that could even become mandatory life imprisonment.

On July 9th 2022, the Court of Assizes of Treviso handed down a sentence of 28 years’ prison to the anarchist comrade Juan Sorroche for the double explosive attack of August 12th 2018 against the premises of the Northern League at Villorba.
With these measures an attempt is being made to isolate our comrades of the revolutionary movement: to interrupt their contribution to debates and discussions within anarchism; to stop publications and writings considered dangerous by the democratic order. At a time of great difficulty, both for States and governments, there is also an attempt to flatten the revolutionary movement on insubstantial practices by waving the axe of 41 bis and life imprisonment. In fact, there is visibly a warning to those who, starting from this autumn, will feel colder, hungrier, and see a worsening of their living conditions.

All this makes clear, on a general level, the true new face of capitalism, which has reconverted and remodelled numerous aspects of social life, not least through the repressive horizon. It is the penal apparatus, in fact, that is making a decisive contribution to supporting and formulating ever new techniques bent on the political production of reality. As a result of this reading of things, we are calling for the total revolutionary struggle against capitalism, recognising it as the most effective tool to interrupt the construction of a social model of which the prison, with all its productive technological apparatus, is an integral part. The State and capital are having recourse to coercive laws and police tactics to disperse or suppress any collective action in opposition to the corporations. The forms of surveillance and police control are multiplying in perfect coherence with the cheapest political instrument at the service of governments: democracy, a governmental device in permanent evolution that today is changing its essence from old formulas of interclassist coexistence into economically sharper, bureaucratic and identity-based formulas. Thus, while the security of the bosses is represented by the tools devised ad hoc by mediocre consultants of repression, our security, that of the exploited, is represented by the destructive attack on those who speculate on the attempt to achieve dominant social control, leaving the field open to corporatist fury. This political project aims to restructure the relations between State, market and individuals from above and to preserve, within increasingly abrupt changes, longstanding class privileges. Hence the daily risks to our lives. The productive discipline conveyed by the new capitalist principles is permeated in the various structures of society and has dotted its horizon with death, hunger and destruction.

We are therefore grateful to those who, both today and in the past, have struck the class enemy recognised from time to time in the social magma generated by the changing rhythms of production and demonstrated its vulnerability. We are aware of the immense difficulties we will encounter on our way. However, one of the main goals of anarchist propaganda is to push as many people as possible to action against the State and the bosses. This is not something that can be placed on a hypothetical scale that measures the profit gained in relation to the energy expended.

« “Spreading ideas” and “propaganda” , “thought” and “action”, the heart of anarchist consistency, of anarchist action, should always coexist. Spreading ideas: the debate among anarchists and the deepening and evolution of our analysis and of our thinking. Propaganda: opening up to the world through deed, action, demonstrations, street battles. Destructive actions that talk to everyone. The powers of a democratic State counter ‘propaganda’ when it is turned into action, but also the anarchists who with websites and newspapers call to action. This is indicative of what power fears, it fears our words when they clearly make ‘propaganda’, it fears thought that spurs action, thought that becomes action. Then when the spread of ideas comes about through ‘propaganda by the deed’ for States there is no choice but to give in and lose power or react and violently repress.» (A. Cospito).

We do not believe that economic planning or repressive actions produce the expected effects in full. The speed to which these processes are subjected also speeds up errors of judgement, with constant changes of course and reshaping of arrangements. Therefore, a continuous and rapid bankruptcy provision is the certain fact that this new phase of capitalism brings with it. We are, however, convinced that it has already been decided who will have to pay the price for this failure and we are already experiencing what resources will be put in place to curb those who want to put a spoke in the wheels of this project. It was in a prison of all places that the first signal was given: Modena, March 2020. The steadfastness of revolutionary practice composed of analysis, study, in-depth knowledge and consequent action allows for a continuous recalibration of the focus on the class enemy and the strategies through which its exploitation is carried out. This practice cannot be stopped, it reproduces itself every day and haunts the dreams of bosses, governors and magistrates. This is the revolutionary continuity that we make our own and that places us at the side of Anna, Alfredo, Juan and Ivan.
