Molotov cocktails, mortar fire… two policemen injured after the “coordinated” attack on the Vitry police station

However, a real confrontation took place at the foot of the police station of Vitry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne), during the night of Sunday to Monday, August 1. Several people, all dressed in black, attacked the police station, at around one o’clock in the morning, throwing Molotov cocktails first at the back of the building, then firing mortars at the facade.
The material toll was also high: in addition to the police station hit by five Molotov cocktails and mortar fire, up to 56 impacts were found on the car of one of the patrols. Two police vehicles were partially destroyed.
The gang that wanted to attack the police arrived by the allée du Marronnier and started throwing Molotov cocktails at the protective fence of the police station parking lot, but also at the police officers who were outside. Another attack started a few moments later, on the front of the police station, with mortar fire.
A system to block the opening of the gate of the parking lot had even been hung on a fence to prevent any exit of the police station through the parking lot. The targeted police officers managed to get out of the police station to try to arrest the attackers. They used tear gas grenades, but again they were fired upon, this time by mortars. The attack lasted a total of at least 45 minutes, and up to 20 people were reportedly involved.
One person, who would have taken part in the attack, has been arrested and could be formally identified thanks to the forensic analysis carried out. The video surveillance images will also be analyzed.
Two policemen of the BAC, 34 and 33 years old, were also injured by the numerous mortar shots they were hit by. They suffer from tinnitus and have been given a one-week work stoppage at this stage. On the car of the attacked BAC policemen, about sixty impacts corresponding to the fireworks mortar shots were found. “A real relentlessness that could have had much more serious consequences. One of the mortars exploded inside the vehicle”, deplores an officer of the department. Another vehicle in the courtyard of the police station was damaged by the Molotov cocktails thrown at it.
The police are now hoping to avoid an escalation of violence around the scene. Departmental reinforcements are already expected in the coming nights around the police station.
